Politics Crap

I was pleasantly surprised, though mildly skeptical, to hear the President propose efforts to reduce our dependence on foreign oil in last night's State of the Union. As it turns out, the skepticism seems to be well-placed, as noted here.

Stereotypical Bush-bashing aside (it's far too easy, frankly - like making fun of Teejay's haircut), I'm interested in your thoughts on alternative energy. I've come to believe that reducing our dependence on fossil fuels is one of the most important things our generation can do for those that follow us, for a variety of economic, environmental, and national security reasons. Thoughts?

That cheap source of electricity is called nuclear. If we could just get our collective panties unknotted about this particular energy source, we'd be doing pretty well right now. Only about 5% of our nation's electricity is produced with nuclear power. The rest is oil, coal, and natural gas. Coal is still king -- it's the most abundant fossil fuel the US has. Oil is OK for generating electricity, but natural gas is the worst.
