When was it that W&M changed its name from the "Indians" to the "Tribe"?
What I haven't seen addressed is the most "offensive" team name of them all, (no, not the Yankees), the Redskins.
Chris Rock said something along the lines of the name Redskins is akin to a team called the Newark Ni**ers.
I believe that political correctness is making us all become a bunch of nancies. Look at Klam.
And the Redskins won't be addressed (regardless of whether you think that it should) because it is a brand name with tremendous value on a par with, say, Wachovia or any number of consumer brands. Forcibly requiring a change in the name of the Washington NFL team has to pass both a social test and a legal test as it would essentially be an expropriation of an asset, or a taking as the legal eagles among us would call it.
That letter is perfect, and the NCAA can't win for losing. Worst-Run Organizations on the Planet:

2. Major League Baseball
3. NCAA
4. Va Psi Chapter of Pi Lam (RIP)
Didn't Matt Rodell hook up with "The Squaw"? Like the Four Corners offense and the Anheuser-Busch Hospitality Center, that story is something that'll be lost on tomorrow's children.
Steiner and Kenny can confirm or refute this, but I've heard Jewish folks here at the office refer to themselves as "Members of the Tribe." Then again, maybe they get pissed off every time they see the logo.
I'm a lifelong Redskin fan and I'm amazed every year that they don't change the name. It's indefensible.
Did Hofstra change the name from Flying Dutchmen to Pride because it was offensive to the Dutch or to gay people?
