It appears that the city will be moving forward with this event. Any folks who will be in the area are welcome to join in on the revelry/debauchery.

I had a couple questions and I thought you NoLa experts (ie, Whitney, Corcoran) might be able to chime in with a couple options.

1) Can folks recommend a good, reasonably priced hotel in the French Quarter? I've called a couple places that have quoted me Jazzfest rates, so I know some places are up and running now and looking to book rooms that weekend.

2) Any restaurant recommendations? I know a few places, but not many. And I'd rather avoid the overpriced tourist traps like Emeril's restaurant.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Tim

Just plain wrong

If you need a laugh and have ever heard of Black Metal, continue reading.

The site links to some silly pictures of guys who need a lot of counseling.

The last picture reminds me of a rugby practice where Cary (the coach) was kneeling down in a huddle. On the front page is a photo of the new W&M President Gene Nichol, who looks like Chris Farley with a brown wig. Inside are a few more photos of Nichol wearing what I think is that dead woodchuck Rezvan found on Harrison Ave during Blowout '96. Can we get the Office of Development to buy this guy a new rug, or maybe some hair plugs? Would you buy brake pads from this guy without a guarantee on the box?

Sammy will be interested to note a photo of Nichol, his family, and his hairpiece posed in front of a banner welcoming him "home," with a green and gold seven under a crown and a sword. If you're too lazy to click on the link, look below for my favorite snippet:
Chavez, accompanied for some reason by Diego Maradona, the world's second most famous cocaine addict next to Kate Moss, chastised President Bush for even thinking about giving Venezuelans access to American-style jobs and prosperity, calling the free trade plan a pretext to "invade." Man, is the music industry going to get it by illegally tracking pirating. I guess two wrongs do make a right.

20 recent SONY BMG titles have a hidden program that installs itself when the disc is used in a windows pc (mac and linux/unix machines are safe). Sony says it’s to protect itself against copyright infringement. Problem is the app supposedly transmits information (little sketch here but cd title, IP address, and listening habits of other artists/albums) back to Sony and its partner First 4 Internet without the users consent.

CA (Computer Associates) has listed the program officially as a trojan spyware program. And there is no uninstall mechanism in place to remove the hidden files within the cd. Sony has recently released a patch to uninstall the app. But there is still a question if it may cause windows to crash if the files are removed via spyware cleaners. The uninstall patch on their website requires name, email address, cd title and name of their first born (jk) to download the file. Nice touch Sony. Sony is of course downplaying the whole thing. But there are people lining up to file a class action suit against them. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

And in a bizarre twist, even if you could remove the spyware it might be against the DMCA because it might be considered circumventing an anti-copying mechanism.

Wonder what Newbury Comics will say if I try to return the new Franz Ferdinand cd I just bought because it has spyware on it. Guess I'll have to only buy cd's via i-tunes or other web outlets from now on.

Never too old to shotgun

When was the last time you shotgun-ed a beer? His name was Ethan. People called him Herb, and it was funny. He was very politically-minded, and though it was always apparent on which side of the fence he stood, every Election Day he'd encourage you -- the folks from every tick along the political spectrum -- to get out there and vote. That was his thing. Like clockwork every year. And then he moved to Florida and now he just doesn't give a damn. Oh, he still cares about politics. He just doesn't give a damn about you people. But you should probably go vote, anyway.

Good times in the 'Burg last weekend, except for losing to friggin' JMU on a late field goal. A handful of fratres from the class of '90 reconvened for its 15th year milestone, among them Brothers Day, Eckert, Weaver, Tell, and Karn. After kicking off Saturday at Coby Beck's tailgate, I, along with younger fratres Gibson and Guy, joined this group in a visit over to the House Formerly Known As Pi Lambda Phi. After half a beer on the back porch, we made our way into what is now just a dorm and hunkered down for several hours, innumerable beers, a few shots of Wild Turkey courtesy of the current inhabitants of the suite, and the worst round of Z ever played. Sitting in the bar area with a good drunk on amid bad jokes still takes me back.

Friday and Saturday night the Delly was stuffed with returning alums, sprinkled with a few current students. I enjoyed hanging out with Al Haniman, pretending he was Cliff Krug (the likeness is uncanny), and letting him re-blaze the Ho Chi Minh Trail on the porches of both Pi Lam and the Delly. I was able to chat up old Lammie gals Bridget Falls, Debbie Cerrone, and Liz Rucker with all of the drunkenlust of the old days, but the only nipple I saw belonged to a leggy, blonde 6'1" student who couldn't manage to stay in her wildly inappropriate top as she talked to Weav and me. Good times.

Evan, Lud, Scoop, Matthias, and Jim Connor all received multiple toasts and dutiful acknowledgment at the alumni brickyard. Always worth a quick walk by there.

There were plenty of other stories for the weekend either too tame or too sordid to detail here, but I had yet another great trip back for Homecoming. I've only missed one in 12 years, but it kind of bums me out that the Pi Lam Homecoming numbers continue to wane. Yes, common sense says that this is the inevitable pattern and there's no amount of rallying one guy can do to reverse the trend. Clearly I have never been one for such common sense, so I'll be bugging you douchebags next year to come back all over again.

We've got a serious marketing problem here...

I was browsing around the web thinking about the next level to take the LammieWeb/LammieNet thing to. type='text'>Relax . . . the idiots are coming

I, for three, will be at Homecoming. Dutch "The Douche" Eckert will be my wingman, and DreamWeaver, his. In concert, we are berating the Paisley Prince himself to post and make an appearance. Who knows what may happen?

Fifteen years since I walked the campus--hard to believe. I don't know many of the younger guys who participate in the old L-net, but many of the older guys, at least when we were at school, were very negative on the College of Knowledge. Guys like Fatty, Jake, Jehr-dog, Random Violence, even my year, like Chef Tell, always seemed down on the place.

Not me--I loved it. The college gave me the four best years of my life, and the best friends I have ever had or could have even imagined. I cannot think of anyone who is as close to his college classmates as I am--even those I know who graduated from Annapolis and West Point. I guess that says quite a bit about the pledge program we used to run--"I'll take my goats over your plebes any day!"

On top of the social benefits I reaped, I loved my classes, too. Here, I know my views diverge from many of my contemporaries who took the Econ Highway, translated into Spanish, right on out of the Burg. I doubled majored in English and Government, and might have gone for a third in Religion, History, or Philosophy if I had had the time. Don't get me wrong--I was not any smarter than guys like Billy K. Frieder--I just enjoyed it--but I think I was right up there.

I have a good life now. I love going to work everyday. I have a great family and love coming home every night. However, from 1986 to 1990, I lived, literally, within a stone's throw from my best friends. I could not have been luckier. Perhaps, I can reclaim a little bit of that during this Homecoming.

I hope so.

Hey, Idiots

See, when I bother to write up a Homecoming-related post, I sort of expected that at least one person might chime in that they would be there. It doesn't look like anyone is organizing a massive golf outing, but if someone wants to play, I am game.

And for those who can't make it down on October 21-23, there is always . . .

Homecoming II: Electric Boogaloo
November 5, 2005
William & Mary vs. JMU under the lights at Zable Stadium

Checking In

Been out of town two of the past three weeks on vacation and traveling for work. A few tidbits...

1. Got to spend bar time with Lammies Mike Paci, Craig Gormley, and Cap Noonan in Boston, Mike Scott in NYC (as well as Little Sister Clare Ludvigsen), and Doug Malone in San Fran. All good times. Thanks to you dudes for humoring me with a few hours of beer-drinking and chuckles. Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and Kansas City coming up in a couple of weeks.

2. It is hard to set aside the numbers that Ortiz has put up (especially the fashion in which he has put them up - late-inning game winners), but the fact of the matter is that he is a detriment in the field and I find it hard to award someone with the title of Most Valuable Player when he can't field a position.

As a Yankees fan, I know just how awesome a hitter he is and how much he means to the Sox (or how much he could have meant to us - damn!). What makes it harder to vote against him is watching what he did last night to keep the Sox 1 game back going into this weekend, but unless they change the award to read Most Valuable Offensive Player, it has to go to a full-time player.

Should be a great sports weekend.

Go Brooks Bollinroethlisbrady!

Yankees 25 Man Roster

I recognize there are about 5 people who may be interested in this post, but I'm throwing it out anyway.

I don't want to jinx anything, but I was thinking about how the Yanks' roster would look if they had to come up with a 25 man squad. Here's what I have:

Hitting definites (11): ARod, Jeter, Cano, Giambi, Posada, Flaherty, Matsui, Sheffield, B. Williams, Martinez, Sierra

Pitching definites (9): R. Johnson, Small, Wang, Wright, Mussina, Chacon, Sturtze, Gordon, Rivera

Other hitters (3): Crosby, Womack Bellhorn

Other pitchers (2): F. Rodriguez, Proctor

Left out: Lawton, A. Phillips, Embree, Franklin, Leiter, Mendoza

The way I see it, you have to have Bellhorn on the roster because you need a back-up infielder. Womack makes it as a pinch-runner, Sierra makes it as a pinch-hitter and Crosby makes it as a defensive replacement/pinch-runner. You could make the case for Lawton over Crosby, but I think Torre likes Crosby a lot, based on the playing time he's earned over the last few weeks.

As far as pitching goes, the Yanks will have a tough time figuring out what to do with Mussina, who's been unbelievably inconsistent. Small's versatility makes him a weapon out of the bullpen, but he's probably the team's #3 starter at the moment, after Johnson and Chacon. Proctor got some big outs in the 9th last night and may hang around to pitch the garbage innings.

This weekend's series will start October's playoff push. If the teams split Friday and Saturday's games, I feel the Yanks will have a let-down b/c they know a loss on Sunday won't end their season. I would love to see them drive a stake through Boston on Friday and Saturday, allowing the Massholes to focus on the Pats on Sunday.

Summer of Festivals

My summer of hippie music festivals is over. (Link to article about Telluride Blues and Brews in title). Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Blues and Brews, and Widespread Panic at Red Rocks. The fitting end to the summer was riding up the Telluride gondola on a full moon night with six potheads filling the tiny space with Cheech & Chong-like quantities of smoke and laughing to the point of near-asphixiation when one of them declared we were all riding in a "ganjala." They were agog with excitement when I told them that the denziens of Telluride would soon be voting on a town ordinance which would make enforcement of misdemeanor marijuana crimes the "lowest priority" of the local police department.

Now it's time to ski. Unfortunately no snow yet.

The Black Crowes at Blues and Brews were absolutely amazing. Full on freak & roll. They more than made up for the pitiful druken display they made of themselves 10+ years ago when I saw them last. If you have a chance to see them on this tour I would highly recommned it. Seems like they finally got their shit together.

Jenn and I are planning to get a house or condo for the full Bluegrass Festival next year, June 15-18. It's as much fun as Jazzfest, but with perfect weather and much better scenery. If anyone is interested let me know, sooner the better.

Jashe

Interesting article in USA Today - The Global War on Women

While I don't agree with everything in the article and feel a couple of the analogies are a bit sensationalistic, it's a different perspective on what the War on Terror is also about -- the Global War on Women.

I don't believe any of you out there in the LammieShpere believes that women should not have the same opportunities and rights that we as men enjoy in our society. Yelling "gaesh" and verbally abusing college-aged women aside, we as a group can rationally conclude that any society that categorically excludes 50% (give or take) of it's population from contributing to both the social and the economical fabrics cannot succeed and flourish in a global economy.

A few snippets:
The sudden transition of women from men's property to men's partners in our own country unleashed dazzling creative energies. In the historical blink of an eye, we doubled our effective human capital — and made our society immeasurably more humane. Our half-century of stunning economic growth has many roots, but none goes deeper than the expansion of opportunities for women.
...
In traveling the globe, I've witnessed far more instances of the mistreatment of women than I care to recall, but the one that always leaps to mind is local and superficially benign: In the southern heat of a Washington summer, it's common to see a male Middle Eastern tourist comfortably dressed in a polo shirt and shorts trailed by a staggering woman wrapped from head to toe in flapping black robes, eyes peering out through a mask. It offends me to meet that image in my country — or anywhere.
...
We do not think of our troops abroad as fighting for women's rights. But they are. This is the titanic struggle of our time, the liberation of fully half of humanity. Islamist terror is only one aspect of it. But we can be certain of two things: In the end, freedom will win. And no society that torments women will succeed in the 21st century.

I'd like to hear some of your views on this facet of the War on Terror.

(I guess Carles' post just below this one throws a monkey wrench into some of my conviction.)

Fun in the shower

Looking for ways to spice up your shower rub? And since I am expecting the inevitable $50 Barnes & Noble birthday gift certificate from mom & dad to arrive in the mail in a week or so, I thought I'd oblige. Some tidbits he gave the crowd: best all around player he ever played against - Carl Yastrzemski; best pitcher he ever faced - John Tudor; his baseball idol - fellow San Diegan Ted Williams. Savor that Peace, Love and Understanding for 3 seconds.....................OK. Boston Sucks!

Fit to be Jammed

Hello Lammies. I write this missive from Athens, Greece, where I am wrapping up a kick-ass 10 day vacation. I spent 8 days in the Greek Isles before returning to Athens, where I will fly home on Sunday. I am giving my strongest white to the Greek Isles. It was amazing out here. I am currently drunk and alone at an internet cafe. The girlfriend is sleeping off a cold with some Benadryl and I'm chugging beers alone at a techno internet cafe alongside Greeks with faux-hawks.

The point of this e-mail is to tell those of you out there who care that I dropped the hammer and asked Maryellen to marry me. She agreed, like the sweet, naive soul that she is. What makes this story so funny is that I did it in Mykonos, the "party island" of Greece. And I did it at 3 AM, while somewhat hammered, after a night of partying. It's amazing how a couple liters of wine can create some resolve in a poor sap like myself. There have been at least 50 better times to do it since then, but I needed to pass the rock before I lost it.

Pondering a "Welcome Back New Orleans" Bachelor Party in 2006,

Tim

Best Bad Food

Whit, Pellicane and I spent last Saturday night indulging in a 2:00 am repast at Giovanelli's in New Brunswick, NJ. Setting aside for a moment the gastronomic wizardry displayed by Mr. Lester, our glee in shoving really tasty but grossly unhealthy cholesterol bombs into our faces got me to thinking. What's the best really bad food you've ever had? Where would you go if you needed one really greasy, really artery-clogging, and really sublimely satisfying meal? I really enjoy the White Spot in Charlottesville, for one, and the aforementioed Giovanelli's has a menu marked by diversity and excess in equal portions. Let's hear it from the assembled gastronomes.

oops i did it again

Hey folks, I dont know how it keeps happening but Corie and I are expecting our third kid in May. The original plan was to grab some beers at a local watering hole, JJ Foley's, and then drink some more while Whit babysat his two girls. Well, the JJ's didn't happen till much later. But we did get to send some quality time at the Raddison roof-top pool drinking beers out of styro-foam coffee cups which led to the great white whale sighting or a half naked Bruce Springsteen. Still can't get the image out of my mind.

Eventually we made it out to JJ's and proceeded to drink Guinness and do multiple Jameson shots. I lost track after the first three. Paci and I took off about the same time to leave Whit and Cap in their quest to finish off the Jameson bottle.

I'm still hung-over this minute and probably should have booted in between cars at the train station like Paci. Jump #169 (and 170) in the books

Fellas, I made jump 169 this weekend. Click on the URL if you would like to see a flying weenie. The video is big but it shouldnt take too long to download if youve got a t-1 or DSL. The video is actually of 2 jumps. First is me sit flying with the cameraman. The second is a tracking dive. A tracking dive is when a bunch of people chase one guy and the majority of the dive is spent traveling horizontally (as well as the inevitable vertical travel.) Im wearing the same cool jumpsuit in the second jump as in the first one. If you look closely on the tracking dive you can see one guy get caught in anothers burble (draft for you racin' fans) and take him out with what looks to be a well executed elbow smash. Also, check out the horizontal speed as I blow past the cameraman!! 'I'd say this is even worse than when Mike Ditka traded away all our draft picks to get Ricky Williams,' said Saints vice president of pro-personnel operations Bill Kuharich. 'But there's one thing we Saints can always rely on: our chances for a winning season being shitcanned before we play a single down. We're proud to have carried on with this tradition despite everything.' The National Football League has declined the Saints' 'mercy rule' request to be allowed to forfeit all their home games, saying the team must set an example for its home city by being blown out in every contest."

And you thought Dancing with the Stars was ridiculous

The only potentially redeeming thing of this show could be seeing Todd Bridges trying to skate with Nancy Kerrigan.

Globe Article

Shocker?
